Nepal's Political Landscape Sees Major Alliance Formed Between TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable move ahead of next year's general election, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of widespread and deadly young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Tackle Youth Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which led to considerable loss of life.

"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.

The late summer revolt was sparked by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Details of the Fresh Political Agreement

According to the formal pact, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political leadership. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Wider Political Consultations Underway

In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister recently held consultations with several leading political figures. These talks involved former prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the protests.

After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared duty. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
