McDonald's Netherlands Pulls AI-Generated Christmas Ad In the Wake of Backlash.

McDonald's has taken down a holiday advert made using Artificial Intelligence after encountering significant criticism on social media.

The 45-second film was developed via AI-generated video and was initially released online for McDonald's Netherlands on 6 December.

Social Media Response and Removal

Shortly after its release, audiences online lambasted the employment of AI in the commercial. Several described it as "disturbing" and "jarringly assembled".

"This experience is an valuable learning as we examine the proper utilization of Artificial Intelligence," commented a representative from McDonald's Netherlands.

The commercial was developed for McDonald's by Netherlands-based company TBWA\Neboko and American production company The Sweetshop. It depicted various scenarios that often go badly over the festive season, under the tagline "the worst time of the year".

A Growing Phenomenon of AI Commercials

Commercials that include generative AI have become a rising trend among major companies, notably for the holiday period.

  • Another beverage giant has recently released consecutive AI-created holiday ads.
  • Technical Challenges: As segments created with generative AI are susceptible to become unstable the more extended they are, most such clips tend to be roughly a few seconds in length.
  • Industry Concerns: The video also raised worries about automation in the production industry, with some commenters noting it might reduce opportunities for camera crews.

Defense from the Creators

Following the video's removal, The Sweetshop's chief executive, Melanie Bridge, defended the advert.

According to her, the production process required "seven weeks" and involved producing "thousands of takes" which were then shaped during the edit "just as we would on any high-craft production".

"This wasn't an AI gimmick," she commented. "It was a finished piece."

Divisive Public Reception

While the Dutch McDonald's commercial was largely criticized, the response for other AI-assisted holiday ads has been more mixed.

For instance, a recent AI-generated holiday spot from Coca-Cola reportedly achieved a significant "positive feedback" from viewers.

However, several companies have also faced backlash for employing the technique in advertising. Italian brand Valentino, for example, was lambasted for ads that critics called "cheap" and "disturbing".

The episode illustrates the evolving debate within the advertising and production sectors about the trade-off between technological innovation and creative integrity.
