The US monetary authority cut interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second reduction this year during economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.
The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.
In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement reads. “Price increases has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”
The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.
The Federal Reserve usually studies labor statistics to determine employment trends, including the count of new jobs created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in August.
The figure of jobs created to the economy in August was down by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.
Though the bureau was scheduled to publish September’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the shutdown started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand positions in September, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell said earlier this month, a trend he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.
Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still issued its inflation report for last month that showed that costs are going up, albeit slowly. Costs rose three percent over the last year, the peak since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
