The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US on five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
Officials from Europe including the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce laws governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.
